Sega announces large-scale layoffs in the UK

Earlier last week, Sega announced large-scale layoffs in the UK and the sale of its studio, Relic.

On March 28, the game company Sega announced that a total of 240 people would be laid off in Sega Europe, Creative Assembly, and Sega HARDlight studios in the UK, and it would completely sell its well-known studio, Relic Entertainment.

Sega said that the layoffs would mainly focus on Creative Assembly and Sega Europe. Creative Assembly is known for creating the popular PC-based strategy game series “Total War” and released “Total War: Pharaoh of Egypt” with an ancient Egyptian theme last year. The studio had also developed a 3A multiplayer hero arena project called “Hyenas”, but Sega cancelled the project during the open beta last year.

It is not yet clear exactly how many people within Creative Assembly will be affected by the layoffs. Sega added when talking about the future of the studio, “Creative Assembly will continue to focus on the development of the ‘Total War’ series and there is a new project that has not been announced yet in progress.”

At the same time, Sega confirmed that it would completely sell its studio, Relic Entertainment, which would make Relic, the developer of the “Company of Heroes” and “Dawn of War” series, an independent studio. Relic said that this was thanks to the help of an “external investor”, but the specific identity of the investor is not yet known. Sega said it is “working closely with Relic to complete this transition and wishes them all the best in the future.”

IT Home noticed that Relic was also recently responsible for the development of the latest PC and Xbox versions of Microsoft’s real-time strategy game “Age of Empires” and is still providing ongoing support for the game. “For our fans, we want to assure you that we will continue to support our games, including Company of Heroes 3,” Relic posted on social media. “We appreciate Sega’s support over the years and the guidance provided during the transition, which was essential to our success. Although we are leaving Sega, we are still friends and colleagues.”
