The game developer of “Borderlands”, Gearbox, is being spun off and sold.

After Embracer Group sold Saber Interactive for $247 million, it recently announced the spin-off of its Gearbox studio and the sale of some assets to Take-Two Interactive for $460 million (currently about 3.33 billion yuan).

Gearbox is the developer of the “Borderlands” series of games and the publisher of the “Relic” series. Embracer Group acquired Gearbox for $1.3 billion (currently about 9.568 billion yuan) in 2021.

Embracer Group continues to spin off the Gearbox studio, retaining most of the development studios, and continues to hold the copyright of games such as “Borderlands”, “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands”, “Homeworld”, “Risk of Rain 2”, “Duke Nukem”, and “Brothers in Arms”.

Embracer Group will retain the Gearbox San Francisco publishing department and still hold the publishing rights of the “Relic” series. Embracer Group will also retain the support studio Lost Boys Interactive, which was heavily laid off a few weeks ago.

Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, said:

As a long-term significant shareholder of Embracer Group, I believe in the future development strategy of Embracer Group and fully believe that this transaction is the best solution, which is obviously a favorable arrangement for Embracer Group, Take-Two, and of course, Gearbox Entertainment.
